Duluth: Dr. Daniel Nikcevich named East Region President and CMO

Dr. Daniel Nikcevich

Oncologist Dr. Daniel A. Nikcevich has been named President and Chief Medical Officer for Essentia Health’s East Region. He has been serving as Interim President and CMO since April.

Two months ago, we asked Dr. Nikcevich to serve as Interim President while we searched for a replacement for departing President Dr. Thomas G. Patnoe. Within weeks, it became apparent that Dr. Nikcevich was a strong candidate for this key leadership role.

Dr. Nikcevich has held a number of leadership positions since coming to Duluth from Duke University Medical Center in 2002. After serving several years as Section Chair and later Section Chief of East Region Hematology and Oncology, he was named Medical Director of Essentia Health’s Cancer Center in Duluth.

In 2009, Dr. Nikcevich was asked to bring oncology services from all three regions together under the Essentia Oncology & Hematology Medical Group. His efforts led to greater collaboration among the three regions, particularly in the area of research and clinical trials. This is an area of particular interest to Dr. Nikcevich, who served many years as Principal Investigator for Essentia Health’s Community Clinical Oncology Program.

Most recently, Dr. Nikcevich served as Essentia Health’s Associate Chief Medical Officer. He was promoted to Chief Medical Officer in March, but agreed to step away from those duties to assume interim leadership of the East Region.
