Dr. Joel Bamford, a dermatologist at Essentia Health’s Duluth Clinic, will retire this week after a 37-year career with the health system.
“I’ve been very fortunate to have research opportunities over the years. The ability to do that research has been very valuable,” Dr. Bamford says. “I’m indebted to the Miller-Dwan Foundation and the Duluth Clinic Foundation for their financial support of that research.”

Dr. Bamford is a fellow in the American Academy of Dermatology and his research has included work on rosacea, eczema, psoriasis and acne.
Dr. Bamford, his wife and their two daughters, Sarah and and Maria, moved to Duluth in 1974. He was drawn to the city and liked the clinic’s collegiality. He says he has been fortunate to work with many talented physicians and staff members.
Dr. Bamford plans to sail and read in retirement. He also hopes to continue doing volunteer medical care and research. “I see ever-developing opportunities in research and the delivery of health care, especially in the enlarged Essentia Health,” Dr. Bamford says. “One likely venue is the Cochrane Collaboration, which has a goal to bring evidence-based medicine into policy-maker awareness and our practice.”
Colleagues will celebrate his career from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, in the Doctors’ Dining Room in the basement of the Duluth Clinic’s Third Street Building. Friends are encouraged to stop by and wish him well.
